I recently tweeted “I have been putting stuff back at the register when checking out. Weird but I’m proud of myself. Like I’m not embarrassed, there is no shame. I’ve come a long way #adulting #frugal #debtfree” Believe it or not this is a significant milestone within my financial journey. Shame and trauma from growing up in poverty; has caused me to behave in ways that showed or prove that I was not broke. It is a sneaky little feeling.
In the past, this social pressure has caused me to override the need to do something that was financially beneficial. After years of practice and the slow development of an “I don't care what anyone thinks” attitude, my impulse spending has significantly declined. Check out my tips on how you can do the same.
Time Yourself
I play a game when shopping. The goal is to enter and exit a store in less than 10 minutes. I have noticed the longer I peruse a store equates to more spending. Hey, if I want to take a stroll somewhere; I’ll take a long walk in a park. Call it extreme but I check the time while in the parking lot.
Shop with a List/ Learn the Layout of your Store
You have heard it before; use a list. However, if you are speed racing through the aisle, a list helps to not forget anything. A list combined with knowing how to navigate a store bypasses going into unnecessary areas increasing temptation to grab non essentials. Don't forget to shop your pantry while making your list!
Make an Effort to Put Something Back
Focusing on wants vs. needs distracts from the maze of last minute buys stores strategically place to increase spending. If you put something back from your cart, great for your purse. If you only avoid grabbing a candy bar, great for your health.
Grab the Smaller Cart or Opt for No Cart
This is a matter of physical constraint. If there isn't enough room in the cart or to hold extra stuff; either place yourself in a hazardous situation or not grab the extra item(s).
